You don’t have to be broken to want more.
There is something I love about September. After the long days of summer, the sunshine, the travel, the time with family and friends, and hopefully a little rest and nourishment, something begins to shift. We start looking ahead. We look through the pictures we’ve taken. We remember the places we’ve been and the people we’ve spent time with. And then we begin to ask: What’s next? September has always felt like a natural opportunity to begin again. Not in the pressured, “New year, new me!” kind of way. Something softer, more intentional. A chance to pause and ask: “Is the way I’m living and working still aligned with where I want to go?”
Maybe you’ve been feeling that question too. Maybe you’re successful, but exhausted. Productive, but disconnected. Taking care of everyone else, but neglecting yourself. Achieving, but still not feeling fulfilled. Or perhaps you’re holding onto an identity you’ve already outgrown. You know there’s more in you. You just don’t know how to get there. If that sounds familiar, I want you to consider something that may change the way you see yourself and your situation: You may not be broken. You may have simply reached a ceiling.
A ceiling is the point at which the way you’ve been thinking, behaving, deciding, or operating can no longer take you where you want to go. And here’s the important part: The ceiling isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s a belief, pattern or fear. Sometimes it’s lack of clarity, or an old identity. And sometimes it’s a strategy that worked beautifully in one season but isn’t working anymore. The first step toward breaking through isn’t blaming yourself. It’s becoming curious.
Your Frustration May Be a Clue
Have you ever found yourself thinking: Why isn’t this working? Why am I working so hard and not getting the results I want? Why do I keep ending up in the same place? Why can’t I seem to move forward?
That frustration can be one of the first signs that you’re feeling stuck. But rather than seeing frustration as something to push away, what if you looked at it as information? What is your frustration trying to tell you? Maybe something isn’t working anymore. Maybe you’ve outgrown a pattern. Maybe you’re trying to solve the wrong problem. Maybe a belief is limiting what you believe is possible. Or maybe your frustration is simply saying: “Something needs to change.”
That’s not failure, it’s awareness. And awareness is where transformation begins. The problem is that when we’re frustrated, we often respond by doing more. We work longer, push harder, try another strategy. We keep spinning our wheels. But spinning your wheels doesn’t necessarily create movement. It can create more stress, more exhaustion, and more unhappiness. You don’t necessarily need more pressure. You may need a different perspective.
The next time you feel frustrated, pause and ask: What am I frustrated about? What might this frustration be showing me? What might I need to do differently? You may be closer to identifying your ceiling than you realize.
You Have the Ability to Choose
One of the most powerful things we have is the ability to choose. We can choose differently or we can choose the same. We can stay where we are or we can decide to move. That’s the beauty of free will.
Now, that doesn’t mean we get to choose everything that happens to us. We can’t control every circumstance. We can’t change the past. We can’t control other people’s decisions. But we do have a choice in how we respond. What we believe. What we focus on. What we continue. What we release. What we’re willing to change. Sometimes when we’ve been stuck for a long time, we forget that we still have a choice.
We begin saying: “This is just the way it is.” “I’ve always been this way.” “I can’t change now.” “I’m too old.”
But are those facts? Or are they beliefs? Because beliefs influence our choices. Our choices influence our actions. Our actions create patterns. And our patterns create results. That means a different result often begins with a different choice. And you don’t have to change everything at once. Sometimes your breakthrough begins with one different decision.
Repeated Choices Become Patterns
One choice usually doesn’t create a ceiling. Repeated choices create patterns.
We repeat what feels familiar. We respond the way we’ve always responded and avoid things that make us uncomfortable. We say yes when we mean no. We put off the thing we know we need to do. We wait until we’re more confident. We wait until we’re more prepared. We wait until the timing is better. And eventually, what started as a choice becomes a pattern. That pattern can become a ceiling. If you recognize yourself here, please don’t judge yourself. There is usually a reason behind a pattern.
Maybe it once protected you and helped you get through a difficult season. Maybe you learned it from someone you loved, or you simply didn’t know another way. You did what you knew to do. And that’s okay. But here’s a question worth asking: Does that pattern still belong in the season you’re entering? That’s where growth begins. Not with shame, with awareness.
I invite you to journal on the following reflective questions: What do I keep doing? What result does that create? What might I be afraid would happen if I did something differently? What new choice could I make?
You don’t need to change your entire life. You need to begin recognizing where you have a choice.
You Don’t Have to Feel Ready to Take the Next Step
Once you recognize the pattern, another challenge often appears: Taking action.
We tell ourselves we’ll move when we’re ready. When we have more confidence. When we know exactly what to do. When we have more money. When the timing is better. When things calm down. When we’re sure it will work. But here’s something I’ve learned: You don’t always get clarity before you move. Sometimes clarity comes because you move.
You take the first step. You learn, adjust, discover. You build confidence and take another step. Your next level doesn’t require you to know the entire path. It requires you to be willing to take the next right step. And that step doesn’t have to be enormous. It might be: A conversation, boundary, or decision. Maybe it’s an application, a new strategy or asking for help.
Finally starting the thing you’ve been putting off. Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t one enormous moment. Sometimes it’s a small decision that says: “I’m not staying here anymore.”
Don’t Let Awareness Become Another Place to Hide
This one is important. You can recognize your pattern and still repeat it. You can understand your ceiling and still live underneath it. You can know what needs to change and still keep waiting.
I don’t say that to pressure you. I say it because I believe there’s more available to you. Awareness is powerful. But awareness isn’t the destination. Awareness is the doorway.
What you see gives you the opportunity to choose differently. What you choose gives you the opportunity to act differently. What you repeatedly do creates a new pattern. And new patterns can create new results. That’s how change happens.
Sometimes the Next Level Requires Support
We live in a culture that celebrates independence. Figure it out. Push through. Be strong. Handle it yourself. But there is no shame in needing support. In fact, sometimes asking for support is one of the most courageous decisions you can make.
Think about something meaningful you’ve accomplished. Chances are someone encouraged you. Someone challenged you, gave you a positive perspective, believed in you. Someone helped you see what you couldn’t see on your own. That’s what meaningful support can do.
It doesn’t mean someone does the work for you. It means you don’t have to carry the work alone. Structure and accountability can help. A different perspective can help. A coach, mentor, or trusted guide can help you see the things that are difficult to see when you’re standing inside the frame.
Sometimes the question isn’t: “Can I do this?” It’s: “What kind of support would help me do this well?”
That’s a very different question.
Your Next Season Is Waiting
I invite you to think about your life and business right now and consider a few questions: What is frustrating me right now? What might that frustration be trying to tell me? What choices have become patterns? Which of those patterns may be creating my ceiling? Am I ready to choose differently? What is my next right step?
And perhaps most importantly: What am I ready to stop carrying into my next season?
Maybe it’s fear or an old belief. Maybe it’s an identity you’ve outgrown or the need to please everyone. Maybe it’s the belief that you have to do everything yourself. Maybe it’s simply the habit of waiting.
You don’t have to have all the answers today. You don’t have to reinvent yourself. You don’t have to become someone completely different.
You may simply need to see yourself and your possibilities differently.
And then choose again.
September reminds us that every season changes. Summer nourishes us. Fall invites us to release. And every new season gives us an opportunity to decide what comes with us.
So as you move forward, remember: You are not broken. You are not behind. You are allowed to begin again. You have the ability to choose. You are allowed to ask for support.
And you don’t have to carry the same ceiling into another season. Your next level may be closer than you think. Sometimes the first step toward it is simply becoming willing to look up.
